You Matter #frommetoyouwhenyouarefeelingblu

Today I have a special card to show you. I have entered it into Kylie Bertucci's latest Blog Highlight with the theme From Me To You When You Are Feeling Blu. (You can vote for your favourite cards over there too). I'm sure you often think of certain people and that you must check in on. But in this busy world sometimes that thought never goes any further. So that is why this is such a great theme as well as a fabulous initiative. So get your backside into gear and contact that special person who may need cheering up or just a kind word to know that they matter. Why not send a handmade card? That will really show how much you care!

So this is what I came up with.

It has this super cute bird on the front peaking through a window............

......checking in on his friend who is sitting on a branch (floating on acetate).

I had heaps of puns at the ready like "chicking in on you" but it all sounded a bit naff. Then I found these great phrases in the Banners for You stamp set from Stampin' Up! and that was that! I think it is a sentiment that fits lots of occasions. The coordinating framelits made cutting the sentiment on the front super easy.

I made the window using the Layering Squares framelits. It's on an angle so that I could fit the birds in easily. I positioned the bird and branch on the front to see where to cut the square. Then I placed the mat over the Dapper Denim front piece and placed the smaller square framelit for cutting. It is a bit hard to see but I have used Foam Adhesive strips to raise the elements on the card front. That extra bit of height really makes a difference.

Watercoloured backgrounds are one of the latest trends. If you are having trouble making yours look effortless like some of the cards you see online I have a tip for you. Try spritzing your watercolour paper lightly with water first. That helps the ink move better on the paper. You won't get those lines from plonking your aqua painter down too hard either. The other thing is to not overwork it. Let it dry and do it's own thing. Watercolour images the same way. Lightly wash areas with water, especially those that you want kept white as I have done here with the bird's head. Start off with a light wash of your colour and then go back in and add darker highlights. This Best Birds stamp set and the coordinating Birds & Blooms thinlits is such a great set. The sentiments in it are also great but not quite what I was after for this card.

Making the card is easy. I have been nostalgic lately and have been revamping old card folds. A few years ago acetate pop up centres were all the rage. Here is a modern take on that. Instead of cutting your cardstock and folding in half as you normally would cut 2 pieces the same width as your normal card front size but 1 cm longer. For my card the front and back pieces measure 10.5 x 16 cm.

Score 1cm from 1 end of each piece and fold back. Place Fast Fuse on each fold and sandwich a piece of acetate or window sheet in between the 2. It is a bit hard to see in the photo. The inside bird is adhered to the acetate and then the sentiment is stamped on the Whisper White card insert.

So don't forget to hop on over to Kylie's blog highlight and check out all of the other entries. You can vote for your favourites. The top 5 get a chance to participate in an international blog hop. And send a card to that person you have been thinking of but haven't quite gotten around to contacting. It will make both your and their day.
